Half a Million Bees Killed in Dutch Fire Incident.

Destroyed beehives
A beekeeper's ten hives were destroyed in a park in the Dutch city of Almere.

A Dutch beekeeper has voiced shock after his ten colonies were burned down in a park in the central city of Almere, resulting in the loss of an estimated half a million bees.

The beekeeper mentioned that every colony contained a population of 40-60,000 bees, and the idea that someone could kill them was horrific.

"It really hurts that my ten colonies have perished," he informed local broadcaster.

Police in Almere, which sits to the northeast of Amsterdam, have appealed for observers after the arson attack on Tuesday night in the city's picturesque Beatrixpark. They posted images of the blaze on social media.

The Dutch government says that more than half of the nation's 360 types of bee are at threat of extinction, as the number of bees declines around the world.

Mr Stringer said that police had informed him an flammable substance had been employed to ignite the hives, which were placed on wooden platforms in a wooded part of the garden.

Almost none of the bees survived and he said that he had little faith the perpetrator would be caught.

Fellow beekeeper a local beekeeper stated on national radio that she had three bee colonies and planned to give him one of them.

For the beekeeper, who looked after the colonies for about almost a decade, the fire means starting a fresh hive in the park from the beginning.

But he insists he will not give up.
